Adapting the Perkins AI Assessment Scale for STEM disciplines: a human agency perspective
In this project we focus on fortifying students’ critical thinking,
while preparing them for an AI-penetrated workplace. Webinar
participants will have the opportunity to consider how the presenters’
approach to curriculum transformation with AI, could be adapted to their
own educational contexts. We will demonstrate one approach taken by the
Department of Chemical Engineering at the Durban University of
Technology (de Koker and Pete, 2025, LTRIE). We aim to adapt this
approach for other STEM disciplines. The AI Assessment Scale (AIAS)
conceptualised by Perkins, Furze, Roe and Mac Vaugh (2024), is an
incremental scale with 5 points, against which assessments can be
designed, from “No AI” to “Full AI“ use by students. As a catalyst for
dialogue, we will demonstrate how the AIAS has been detailed, but also
adapted, for practical implementation throughout the curriculum. The aim
is to make assessment expectations explicit in advance. Expanding the
scale includes adding a human agency lens, suitable pedagogical
dimensions, and aligning the scales to the exit level outcomes (ELOs) of
the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
